The EIN Guide: What It Is, How to Get One, How Long It Takes

Why you need an EIN, how to get one without an SSN and who the responsible party is — short, clear answers.

An EIN (Employer Identification Number) is the federal tax ID the IRS assigns to your company. You need it to open a bank account, sign up for payment platforms, hire employees and file taxes.

Is an EIN Free?

Yes. The IRS issues EINs free of charge. Service providers charge for preparing, submitting and tracking the application correctly.

Who Is the Responsible Party?

The IRS requires a real person who actually controls the company to be named on the application — usually an owner or manager. A company can’t list another company as its responsible party.

No SSN or ITIN?

With an SSN or ITIN, the application can be filed online and the EIN usually arrives quickly. Without one, Form SS-4 is sent to the IRS by fax or mail and processing takes about 4–6 weeks depending on IRS workload.

After You Get Your EIN

  • Keep your EIN confirmation letter (CP 575 or 147C) safe.
  • Open your business bank account.
  • Report address or responsible party changes to the IRS (Form 8822-B).

Requirements vary by person and company. The information on this page is general and is not individualized legal or tax advice.
